DRDO Project NETRA

NETRA(NEtwork TRaffic Analysis) is a software system for surveillance on social sites,
 forums, blogs for any Terrorist activities and also optimised for some sensitive words like 'ATTACK, BOMB or KILL' to detect in real-time which is developed by the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR), a laboratory unit of  Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO) to monitor internet traffic with pre-defined filters, used by Intelligence Bureau, Domestic Intelligence Agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), also by External Intelligence Agency.

National Security Agency was concerned about the increasing terrorist and criminals’ reach on social communication. So, they are looking for a system which monitor it in real time.

Initially, there was two systems developed, one by DRDO'S CAIR and the second one was by National Technical Research Organisation(NTRO) with the help of Paladion, an International Private Agency. There was a committee formed from many Agencies like Research and Analysis Wing, Intelligence Bureau, Ministry of External Affairs, Department of Telecom, National Investigation Agency, Department of IT to test the both systems in which NETRA was approved as NTRO's system was not much efficient, have some problems also because of involvement of International company.
Committee rejected this system as for the security concerns whereas NETRA which perform outstanding also CAIR update their system with the change in the web technologies. The committee was pleased by its performance.

Initially, this system was only used by RAW, but from 2013, used by domestic law enforcement agencies.
